It also comprises of inactive additives chlorhexidine gluconate, citric acid, benzalkonium chloride, tyloxapol, sodium hydroxide, disodium EDTA, fragrance, and purified water. The formulation may be modified in non UK countries; phenyl epinephrine is incorporated in Vicks sinex nasal spray. Oxymetazoline HCl is a nasal decongestant that works miraculously to reduce the pressure in the sinus cavities and open up the airway, by reducing the edema in nasal membranes due to its vasoconstrictor effect (shrinking of nasal blood vessels). The edema otherwise is the generally manifests as nasal congestion, mediated allergic reactions.

Oxymetazoline is a vasoconstrictor that narrows the widening of blood vessels. Thus it may be used in managing sinuses, hay fever, allergies and common cold. Chlorhexidine gluconate, another ingredient in Vicks nasal spray has antiseptic action against nasal infections. Its anti microbial action helps to prevent further growth of bacteria in the nasal cavity. Chlorhexidine is incorporated in Vicks as bacterial intrusion is the major reason for nasal symptoms in allergies, common cold, and fever.

Benzalkonium chloride is used as a preservative, disodium EDTA acts as an antioxidant. The tonicity and pH of the nasal spray is adjusted using sodium hydroxide and fragrance added to increase the aesthetic appeal to the patient.

Vicks nasal spray is easy to administer formulation that has to be held near the nasal cavity to take in a dose of nasal spray ejected by means of an actuator fitted to the bottle. Vicks nasal spray may be used in children above 6 years of age and in adults. The patients are advised to spray 2 to 3 times in each nostril every 10 to 12 hours or as directed by the physician. For children of age less than 6 years, the use of Vicks nasal spray requires approval from the doctor, as there are no safety reports of trial conducted in paediatric patients of age under 6 years.

Since common cold and its symptoms are communicable, the use of nasal sprays should be restricted to only one user. Users are advised not to panic in case they experience temporary burning, sneezing or enhanced nasal discharge, it is only to be assured that Vicks nasal spray has started to work on the nasal cavity.
